Sandy's Blah, Blah, Blog

I started Oh Baby! Magazine with my husband during my first pregnancy. My love of writing and my obsession with magazines paired with my husband’s many skills have proven to be a great combination. I'm from Toronto - born and raised - and I've been married for eight years. Since the inception of Oh Baby! I've had two babies, Andreas and Alexandra . What a ride it's been! I’d like to share with you my struggles with trying to find this so-called – and I think unachievable - “balance” I keep reading about… Follow Sandy E on Twitter

The V Word – I’m Pro Choice

Recently I was engaged in a conversation on twitter about birth control. It seems that I may be the minority here in thinking that it’s completely my husband’s choice to do this. The words “it’s his turn” were thrown around and I get that. I get it, but I don’t agree with it. I don’t view our reproduction as turn taking. I’ve had two children vaginally and I don’t hold it over my husband’s head as “look at what I did for...

Warm it up!

I like spending my money on the latest gizmos as much as the next mom, but certain products just never appeal to me. I find that this reflects the products that I feature in Oh Baby! Magazine and here on the website. I would say that 95% of the time the products featured have been used by me or have my seal approval as something that I think is cool or will make a mom’s life easier. Lately I’m noticing an increase in products that will...

Did Santa ever skip your house?

Last night my daughter had a colossal tantrum. My mom was meant to come and take both her and her brother out for dinner but because my daughter was misbehaving, crying and shouting for the better part of an hour, I made her stay home. That’s right. I’m a believer that if you don’t follow through on your threats, what good are they? My daughter was upset that she didn’t get to go play in the jungle gym after we picked her up at...

Things I love in 400 words.

The sucking sound that newborns make while they sleep, the way they angrily grunt while nursing after you’ve waited too long to feed them, my warm snuggly babies. Buttered movie theatre popcorn with chocolate covered raisins mixed in, watching my kids sleep, waking up naturally, falling asleep again, a big fluffy duvet, getting into a freshly made bed with clean shaven legs, spending a weekend in my pajamas watching films, touching the pads...

Alone with a newborn and a toddler

Alexandra was born Feb 12th and that day was filled with so much chaos! Firstly she was born vaginally without medical intervention. No drugs people. No drugs. And it was the best. I’ll have to talk about that in another post. I had to stay in the hospital for two nights because of complications. Without getting into too much detail, my blood was clotting – on the inside - so my blood pressure was dropping. Anyway, you really don’t want...

Adventures in Food: The Strawberry

Me: “Look at this delicious, red, fresh strawberry.” This piqued my son’s interest enough to come over to where I was standing in our kitchen. Me: “Do you want to try it?” Son: “No.” Me: “Why not? You only need to take one bite and if you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat the rest.” Hook, line and sinker. Son: “Um… ok.” I watched as my lovely little boy took a deep breath and bit into that...

“Just one more story Mommy!”

That’s what my daughter says every night at bedtime. I love that both of my kids love books. Really, I love it. Since they were born I’ve been giving them books to hold, to drool on, to play with, to read. My son’s first word was ‘book’. My daughter’s first word was ‘shoes’. Anyway – they both love books. Every night we (my husband and I take turns) snuggle up with both kids in my daughter’s bed (it’s the bigger one for...

Best Friends?

I realized a few weeks ago that I don't have any cute and recent pics of my kids together. I have lots of them individually. I have a gazillion of them in their pj's. I also have a tonne on my iPhone. But printable, frameable pics that depict the love (ahem, ahem) that my kids have for each other? Zip. Here's my attempt at getting them to pose for one: It looks like they're sleeping right? They're mocking me. I just know it.

My first time using a breast pump

I remember it well. My son was six weeks old and I took my doula’s advice to introduce a bottle to him at this time. Breastfeeding was going great and I would soon need my mom to bottle feed him so that I could return to work. I learned that this is a crucial time to introduce a bottle. If you do it sooner you may end up with nipple confusion and you could hurt your milk supply too soon in the breastfeeding game. If you wait too long you...

The Lost Teeth

My son went from having one loose tooth to walking out of a routine dentist appointment missing two teeth.  The teeth were loose, so our dentist pulled them out. Painless. There was blood and some crying caused by shock. But a visit to the treasure chest and a blown up latex glove with a drawn on chicken face left him toothlessly smiling from ear to ear. He was extremely mature about putting his teeth under his pillow - not scared at all –...

My 6yo has a loose tooth

Ew. This grosses me out. I have a thing about teeth. I don’t really like them when they are not firmly nestled in gums. I am a little paranoid that my kids will break or chip their teeth. It pains me to think about it. I cringe when my kids hit their heads and if there is a remote possibility that they have chipped a tooth, I freak out. This is completely irrational and maybe just a little bit immature. Maybe very immature. Either way,...
