What comes first: the dog or the kids?
What would you recommend to couples who don't yet have children or a dog: get a dog first or have a kid first? Getting the dog first has its advantages. One mom told me that having a dog first gets you used to all the poo you'll be dealing with when you have babies. Another friend of mine said if you have the dog first and then kids, the dog will get ignored once baby comes, and life would change dramatically for him/her -- and that would be...
What’s up with the sizing of kids’ clothes?
Ok…Is it just me? My daughter is almost 15 months old… she fits in 6-12 and 12-18 month at 2 stores. Another store she fits into 6-9m, another is 6-12, one is 1T, another is 3-6m and she even still fits in a 0-3 month hoodie from another brand. Like Really??? So basically all these companies are telling me…that…hmm… my kid is between the age of 0-2 years… ding-ding-ding! Thanks for coming out! LOL! I totally get that...
Signing encourages language development
I happen to have just gotten off the phone with a mom inquiring about WeeHands classes. She knows her baby is ready to start signing because her daughter is pointing to objects and looking at her parents expectantly while sometimes vocalizing. You can without doubt sign to a baby before he or she starts to use gestures and to point but these gestures are a good sign that babies are ready to express themselves through sign. A baby will...
Yes… My kid is small … Deal with it!
Being a Mother of a preemie is sometimes difficult. Obviously, the numerous weeks she was in the NICU were unbearable… but really… I survived. The hard part was and continues to be the number of “extra” appointments she needs to go to. I remember it felt like she was at a different appointment almost every week. From the Cardiologist, to the Paediatrician, the Family Doctor…Eye Doctor… Occupational Therapist… like really. Who has...
Why Blog?
A few of my friends have asked me why all of a sudden I decided to start a blog. In all honesty, I don't know. For most people it could be a small enough reason just to say "I'm bored" or "I need something new".... for me... it’s not that I don't feel fulfilled in any aspect of my life... it’s more of a "what next". I've always been the type of person that likes to try new things... likes to be heard and always seems to be the person...
Mommy brain … it’s back?!
In my world, ‘mommy brain’ (forgetfulness, lack of concentration, and even feeling depressed) is a real phenomenon. I read a article in Time Magazine quoting a book written about ‘Mommy Brain’ which said that in neurological tests, women actually got smarter as a result of pregnancy and becoming a new parent and that mommy brain wasn’t a real issue. I can see where they are coming from in a way, the neuroscientists found in the brains...
The day I almost died …
So…. here goes…. I was 33 weeks pregnant…and wasn’t feeling the greatest for a few days… just had an upset stomach…but nothing that tums and a glass of juice didn’t fix…lol. Well… after a few days I noticed that I still wasn’t feeling the greatest, started losing my appetite… not sleeping (not a big change there)… just figured that maybe I was getting a cold or something. Friday night came around… and I was still not...
Some mommy groups are not for me
After my son was born I started to go to a local mommy group. I loved it so much, mostly because it was real. It was a group of women who talked about real feelings. What it really feels like when you are so tired and you’re baby won’t stop crying. About when your husband tells you it’s about time you lose your baby weight (what a jerk that guy was). About why breastfeeding, even though you are happy to do it, sometimes just plain old...
Healthy kids, healthy planet
We hear a lot these days about the prevalence of obesity and ill health in children all the time, and it’s starting to happen to younger children every year. We also hear a lot about the environmental ill health of our planet. I believe that the solution to both might just start with eating healthy and sustainably, reducing our use of household chemicals, rethinking our North American style of consumption and trying to keep as active as we...
