Boo-ya!
Halloween is one week away! We all have our costumes, our house is decorated, the pumpkins have been purchased and all that’s left to do is buy candy for eager trick or treaters.
I wanted to do something with my kiddies for Halloween and I went down many a hole on Pinterest and left feeling only slightly inadequate. My crafty skills are not the greatest and even though most pages on Pinterest swear that it’s ‘easy’ and ‘anyone can do it’ I really find that that’s just not true for me.
We decided to decorate cupcakes and a small 9” cake for Halloween. Easy peasy. All you need is chocolate cake batter and white icing. You could use your favourite recipe or you could buy a mix and ready-made icing at the grocery store. I won’t tell you which one I did… I have been struggling with a cold and flu-like symptoms, so I’ll just leave it at that.
Bake and cool your cupcakes and cake. Put your icing in a Ziploc bag and snip off one bottom corner (I do have a piping bag, but I wanted easy cleanup — did I mention that I haven’t been feeling well?).
We went with mummy cupcakes. Easy enough, just ‘draw’ lines on the cupcakes with the icing, and top off with m&m eyes.
Then for a spiderweb cake, start off by ‘drawing’ a cross on the cake with the icing. From the center point draw more lines and then join the lines up with curvy lines… I hope you are enjoying my instructions… my brain is foggy. I think I mentioned that I’m sick. I do love this time of year.
I took a plastic spider that came with the fake spider webs that we used to decorate our hedges and plopped it in the middle of our cake. Scary!
And there you have it! A very easy Halloween treat and craft that you can do with your kids. My kids were not involved in the actual baking, mommy didn’t have the patience for that this week, but they were all over decorating and eating!
Happy Halloween!
