One on One with a Mom Entrepreneur: Jennifer Broe of Baby Gourmet

By: Jenn McBride Mom Entrepreneur Baby Gourmet

If the saying “you are what you eat” is true, then I might have a problem, but cofounder of Baby Gourmet, Jennifer Broe is making sure that other little ones start off on the right taste buds.

Baby Gourmet started in Broe’s kitchen when her daughter was six months old. “I wasn’t happy with the quality of baby food products out there,” she said. “So, I spent a lot of hours making her food myself.”

The old take it into your own hands approach spiralled into other moms requesting that she make food for their babies too, and a few purees later, Broe realized that there was a market for homemade food and Baby Gourmet began.

Now, five years and another baby later, Baby Gourmet is made for mass distribution. But how does a busy mommy of two get from blending broccoli in her kitchen to founding a successful company?

A love of food certainly helps, but it also took two years of showcasing at the Calgary Farmers Market to get off the ground and running. “The market was to see what the response would be, and because of the demand and the increase of sales on a monthly basis, I knew there was an opportunity there for a real business.”

Baby Gourmet specializes in organically grown products and recipes that Broe and her sister formulize themselves.

“That’s the key to our success,” she said. “Our recipes took months of reworking to create the perfect blend. We select only the best of ingredients, testing them on thousands of babies and our office staff (the staff love the old fashioned apple crisp recipe) – our taste and quality are incredible.”

Broe’s goal has always been to healthily feed as many babies as possible, and her future plans of taking the brand to a national distribution level are well in the works.
